New York City Driving Tips

New York City is a very crowded place. New York City has a population of 8.4 million people, with 56.5 million yearly visitors. Manhattan alone has a population of over 1.6 million which nearly doubles during the day from commuters. With millions of cars driving through the city each day and millions of commuters and tourists crowding the streets, New York City can be a very difficult place to drive. Below are tips to help you avoid becoming part of the 66,554 crashes that occur in NYC every year.

  • Drive Slow and Stay in your Lane: Many accidents occur when people attempt to quickly switch lanes in congested areas. Avoid this type of accident causing mistake by driving slow and being patient.

  • Know your distance: Driving in New York City includes a lot of stop and go driving. The car in front of you may need to stop short because pedestrians crossing the street or the driver can’t make a light that they thought they could. If you are too close to the car in front of you, you will end up smashing into that car when the driver stops short, so make sure to keep your distance.

  • Make Sure to Signal: Signaling lets other drivers know your intentions so they are less likely to hit you. Accidents and tickets can’t always be avoided. If you are in an accident or receive a ticket make sure to call a traffic lawyer to protect your driving record and keep your premiums down.
